Building the gables first

The fun begins!

The first picture shows Priscilla working on the north side purlin. We did all the log work on that side of the sauna and stacked all the milled logs on the other. This kept things organized and clean. The gin pole was able to reach over so we could lift these logs onto the deck. (More advanced planning).

Why build the gables first? Well, it's easier to stand on the ground than on ladders! Logs come apart easy and when it comes time to put the gables on the finished log walls it will be just a matter of putting the pieces back together. I like to do my projects and remove as many variables as possible so I'm only focused on one thing. For example when lifting heavy things I want all the joints cut first. That way I'm only concerned about the lifting part and not the joint cutting part at the same time.

The second picture is most important. Here I'm using a vertical 1 x 2 board to establish a reference point for finding the location of the purlins on the cap logs. It's hard to see but the purlin is resting on a half-log. As this is a log cabin one wall has to start with a half-log and end with a half log. Otherwise you will end up with a large gap under one wall. Lace your fingers together and you will see what I mean. Both pinkie fingers cannot rest on the desk at the same time.

The purlins are cut with a flat side to mate with the top of this half-log. This is great because you can seal this up tight. The angle cut on top of the purlin corresponds with the pitch of the roof. Notice that the flat section that joins with the half-log does not go all the way to ends of the purlins. You want to see the entire round end of the logs on both the front and back of the sauna.

Here's the important part. The distance from the top of the half-log to the face of the pitch angle you cut on the purlin have to be the same. Make sure this is as close as possible. If you don't the roof line will come out crooked. I used the vertical board to check all of this.
